Sharp is selling the world’s first 8K TV next month for $133000
It will go on sale next month Where regular HD has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, 8K measures in at 7680 x 4320.
Instead, Sharp is positioning the panel as a monitor for businesses that can make use of the ultra-high resolution.
To realize 8K, every element of the production chain has had to be developed, from the cameras that shoot images to studio equipment that has to deal with the massive bandwidth required by uncompressed 8K video to transmission systems and, finally, TV sets.
Most companies are only just discussing 4K. The screen will utilize Sharp’s IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) backplane and a number of other technologies by the company. To begin with Sharp is aiming the new panel at digital signage guys, the content producers and those editing 4K video.
Sharp will produce the sets at its state-of-the-art factory in Kameyama, Japan. According to IHS DisplaySearch, this year only around 2.7 thousand 8K display panels will be shipped commercially.
Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) will start to broadcast in its 8K super hi-vision format sometimes in 2018.
The initial market for the screen is admittedly small, but with the likes of Vestel and TCL both showing off 8K screens at this year’s IFA show, it will be a growing market. Around that timeframe companies like Sharp are expected to introduce 8K TVs for consumers. 8K delivers 16 times the resolution of full-HD (high definition).
IMAX, be afraid, be very afraid.
