Gasquet stuns Wawrinka to set up Wimbledon semi-final showdown with Djokovic
The final four lineup has an unexpected name, too.
Gasquet emerged from the most compelling quarter-final – featuring two lovely one-handed backhands – with a 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 win over fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.
Played a perfect game, Simon would say later.
Upon the resumption under a closed roof at 3:31 p.m., the second set went with serve until the 14th game when Pospisil earned a time violation at 5-5, 30/30, when he exceeded the 20 seconds between points.
“It was special for a number of reasons, mainly because I will never get the opportunity to play at a home Olympics again”. If he had waited one second longer, I would have served.
He broke Gasquet’s serve in the fourth game of the third set, found his own booming serving rhythm and fearsome backhand bullet and wrapped up the set with a forehand victor. “Everybody knows that”.
Waiting for Murray in the last four is the Swiss seven-time victor, who was barely troubled during a 6-3 7-5 6-2 win over Gilles Simon.
Wawrinka, by contrast, downed Djokovic in the French Open final for a second grand slam title and their previous four grand slam matches had stretched to five sets.
Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and past year, plays 21st seed Richard Gasquet of France next.
“The road is long getting here”, Federer said.
“”I still feel like I’m fresh”, Federer said post-quarterfinals match via Wimbledon.com”.
2012 recalled Before the two were off the court, thoughts had already turned to 2012 when they shared the biggest spoils of that year, Federer taking the Wimbledon title and Murray the Olympic gold medal. Nonetheless, Federer does have a 12-11 record against Murray, including three wins from the 2014 season. “He played unbelievable in the finals of the Olympics”.
Richard Gasquet and Stan Wawrinka probably both deserved a semi-final place after a nail-biting five set battle that went down to the wire.
“I spoke to Anthony Joshua just before I came in here”, Murray said. We saw each other this morning; walked to the practice courts together and stuff. “We get on well”.
Gasquet has also appeared in one USA Open semi-final, but has never made the final of a major and Djokovic is confident his big-game knowledge will prove decisive on Centre Court on Friday.
Weather: Rain; two delays.
Andy Murray: Will Federer break British hearts on Friday?
But it was those memories that immediately sprang back to his mind when his careful and methodical 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 dismantling of Vasek Pospisil raised the prospect of a rematch with the silver medallist that year, Roger Federer. “I was right about to serve the ball”.
When play resumed again after a hold-up of 35 minutes, Pospisil managed to withstand pressure from Murray to hold his serve. Prince Albert of Monaco was there too alongside six-time Wimbledon singles champion Billie Jean King. It’s King’s 55th appearance at Wimbledon.
It’s women’s semifinals day at Wimbledon.
He is breaking new ground on the men’s side with his competitive longevity, and is now just two victories away from an eighth Wimbledon title.
Garbine Muguruza easily won the first set in her Wimbledon semifinal match against Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2.
This rivalry has been a one-way street: Williams has won 17 of their 19 career meetings, including the past 16 in a row.
The top seed hit more baseline winners (15 to 10) and although Cilic did have greater success at the net, the Wimbledon champion won far more points overall (93 to 71).
“I don’t agree with that time when he did it. Maybe the second one, yes, but not that, not at five-all, 30 all”.
