Texas Rangers nominate Beltre for Roberto Clemente award
Cabrera will be presented with his 2015 Detroit Tigers Roberto Clemente Award on Monday at Comerica Park prior to the second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox.
Baseball fans voted online to select the finalists for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year award, which goes to a player who “inspires others to higher levels of achievement by their on-field performances and contributions to their communities”.
The award is given to the player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team”.
According to a release from Baird, a wealth management firm that honored Lucroy in May as its Wisconsin state Community Involved Player of the Year, the catcher is active with “Camp Hometown Heroes, which holds a week-long overnight summer camp for children of fallen USA service members, and he closely works with Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, a Wisconsin-based organization that flies veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials created in their honor”. In 2014, Span started the Denard Span Foundation to provide hope and encouragement to single parents while empowering them to raise confident children within strong families and communities. Jimmy Rollins received the honor last season while with Philadelphia. “His authentic generosity has made him a distinctive ambassador for youth throughout the region”. Willie Mays won the first award way back in 1971; Brooks Robinson took the award in the first season it was named after Clemente.
Clemente, who played right field for the Pirates, died in 1972 in an airplane crash while attempting to deliver supplies to natural disaster victims in Nicaragua. “Clemente embodied everything that is great about the game of baseball”.
