Barea reportedly will stay with Mavericks
Barea have agreed to a deal keeping him in Dallas, reported by Puerto Rico’s El Nuevo Dia. Free agency is far from over, so it will be interesting to see what Cuban does with the absence of a starting point guard. However, the Miami Heat was also rumored to be interested in acquiring the diminutive guard.
Jeremy Lin, the first American National Basteball Association player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent, could be on his way to the Dallas Mavericks next season, as indicated by reports Monday. He returned to Dallas last season after the Minnesota Timberwolves bought out the remainder of the four-year deal he signed in 2011.
In 77 games for the Mavs last season, Barea averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 assists in 17.7 minutes per contest. Barea #5 and Tyson Chandler #6 of the Dallas Mavericks react to a play late in the game during Game One in the Western Conference Quarterfinals of the 2015 National Basteball Association Playoffs on April 18, 2015 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. JJ Barea is expected to sign back with the team as a backup PG.
Devin Harris and Raymond Felton also are under contract with the Mavs and have plenty of experience playing point guard, but they are best suited coming off the bench. This move would likely have to involve a sign-and-trade.
Early in free agency, Barea was linked to Miami – where he went to high school – but that was before the Mavericks improved their outlook significantly by reaching deals with center DeAndre Jordan and shooting guard Wesley Matthews. He knows the offense and has the ability to create for himself and his teammates. Barea to fill it.
