Mahela takes consultancy role at the England cricket
Jayawardene will join England’s tour to the United Arab Emirates for the Test series against Pakistan next month. The news was made official through England Cricket’s Twitter account.
Jayawardene had been in discussions with the European Central Bank during this season, will work with the Test side during the warm-up period in the UAE and the first Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi which starts on October 13.
This time around, they’ll have to contend with the in-form Yasir Shah, who recently picked up 24 wickets at 19.33 in a three-match series against Sri Lanka.
Collingwood, who worked with Scotland at this year’s 50-over World Cup, has been forging a growing reputation as a coach even though he is still captaining first-class county Durham. He will also assist the team during next year’s World T20 after performing a similar role with England during last year’s tournament in Bangaldesh.
“We are delighted that Mahela and Paul will be joining the England management team, supporting our existing specialist coaches in this area”, said the ECB’s Director of Cricket, Andrew Strauss.
“Experience tells me in the UAE you have to be flexible, you have to go for a different style of cricket”.
“The players are a lot more skilful than I have ever been, but I hope to help create an environment in which they learn their own games and get the best out of themselves”.
The former Lankan skipper has been named in England’s management staff for their upcoming series against Pakistan and he has been roped in as a batting consultant for the test team.
