Renault Talisman Initiale Paris Edition – 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show
The big grille and even larger company logo prevent it from being mistaken with something else.
Renault’s all-new Megane, debuting at the Frankfurt show, has more premium rival models in its sights. For the Megane and the Kadjar crossover, things are rather more sophisticated. Its measurement looks somewhat similar to the third generation model, but with slight differences at 25mm lower, 47mm wider in front, and 39mm wider at the back.
A full colour head-up display is now standard, while the instruments are now largely digital, both speed and engine revs displayed by a 7-inch TFT screen ahead of the driver. It takes inspiration from the Renault Talisman saloon by using a portrait-orientated central touchscreen to operate most of the car’s functions, resulting in a simpler dashboard layout. High-end trim levels come with Napa leather on the steering wheel and flashes of chrome throughout the dashboard. These include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, traffic-sign recognition and automatic emergency braking. Three diesels, with 90, 110 or 130bhp will be available. The bulbous, slightly overwrought four-door hatchback will be powered by fuel-efficient diesel and gasoline engines; Europe is likely to be the model’s biggest market. A 165bhp diesel will be available later in 2016. Transmission options include the six-speed manual and the optional EDC dual-clutch, available for the TCe 200 and the dCi 130, while the dCi 160 will get a six-speed dual-clutch.
The new hot hatch is still at least twelve months off, but Renault COO Jerome Stoll has confirmed that the new model will follow the Clio RS in becoming a five door model for the first time. Renault says that 4Control “ensures precise, dynamic handling on twisty roads with total stability at higher speeds” and that “in emergencies, the four-wheel steering provides reassuring, lightning-fast responses”.
Early in 2017 Renault intends to launch a hybrid version of the Megane, which with fuel economy stretching past 94mpg and emissions down to 76g/km is being pitched as the market leader for efficiency.
In its latest iteration, the Megane adopts styling cues developed through recent models like the Clio, and particularly the not-for-UK Espace and Talisman revealed over the last few years.
