Gardner replaces injured Gordon on AL All-Star roster
The brand-new All-Star outfielder learned of his selection along with everyone else at Yankee Stadium Thursday afternoon when they announced that he had been selected over the PA system.
“I just thought that was kind of random”, he said. “””(Yost) could’ve picked several other guys that are obviously very deserving, and for him to choose me, I’m definitely very grateful”.
Gardner said it’s not lost on him that this may be one of the only chances he gets to play in the Midsummer Classic.
A first-time All-Star at almost age 32, Gardner kept on making warmup tosses with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, not reacting to the surprise.
“It’s great, I’m really happy for him”, Girardi said. 298 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs.
“He’s so important to our team”, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals had a comfortable lead and is looking like he will have the final spot on the American League Roster. Some could say that Gardner was a snub from the original selection.
“What they did yesterday with the baldhead caps was pretty embarrassing for some of those guys”, Gardner said with a smile. He received congratulations when he returned to the dugout in the middle of the inning.
Gardner joins teammates Mark Teixeira and Dellin Betances on the AL roster; Teixeira was a replacement for injured Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Baltimore’s Adam Jones will replace him in the AL starting lineup for Tuesday’s game.
Gordon was voted in by fans but injured his groin tracking a fly ball to the warning track during Wednesday’s game with the Tampa Bay Rays and is expected to miss at least two months.
Looks like Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost took notice first.
Gardner hit his 10th home run shortly before he was officially named to the team.
