Cal RB Daniel Lasco expected to play against Texas
In seven losses last season, the Golden Bears gave up 293 points. It’s a ritual during his Wednesday media availabilities – he’s asked to find an analogue for the upcoming opponent’s quarterback.
The California Golden Bears bring their air-raid offense to Austin on Saturday.
But Cal senior linebacker Nate Broussard, who grew up in Plano, Texas, doesn’t recall anything about it. “I was barely into football then”, he said Tuesday. This guy is the real deal. “This young man is exceptional”. But Goff makes the chart at No. 9. The Longhorns’ offense was revitalized when redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard made his first start collegiate start against Rice.
Lasco suffered the injury with just under 10 minutes left in the Bears’ 35-7 win over San Diego State after rushing 19 times for 123 yards and a touchdown.
California will look for Goff to spread the ball its playmakers.
He underwent an ultrasound test and MRI, Dykes said.
Where many quarterbacks can let their feet die while waiting for opponents to come open downfield, Goff does not.
That might be a hard sell to his players. Cal’s quarterback tends to stay in the pocket and throw. Still, it doesn’t significantly impact him at the college level, so it’s not something that will likely result in incompletions against Texas, especially if the Longhorns cornerbacks fail to maintain close contact with a talented group of Golden Bears receivers. The Texas defense was steadfast, taking the ball away from Cal five times and recording six sacks against Golden Bear quarterback Zach Maynard. “We’ll see how he feels”. Some people blew their coverage. California’s Daniel Lasco is the team’s leading rusher with 137 yards and two touchdowns.
But they aren’t delusional about what’s coming next: Cal, Oklahoma State, TCU and Oklahoma. There’s plenty of size there since five of those six returning pass-catchers are 6’2 or taller. This may not be their best, but is certainly warrants a sold out game. Johnson is a speedster who returned a punt for a touchdown against Rice, and Foreman had a big 32 yard TD reception in the same game. Goff uses his athleticism to compliment his passing game, while Heard uses the threat of passing to his big-play targets to get him the space and opportunity to run.
Texas would lose its final game of the season to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl but would still claim the national championship, the 3rd for the university.
Sonny Dykes and Cal bring a high-powered offense to Darrell K. Royal -Texas Memorial Stadium, looking to get in the win column against the ‘Horns. So hoping to bend but not break against the Golden Bears isn’t a particularly effective strategy.
Texas coach Charlie Strong also stripped quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson of his playcalling duties after week one, handing them over to wide receivers coach Jay Norvell. Put it all together and Bedford and the Texas defense have a massive task ahead in attempting to slow down the Golden Bears offense.
