Julio Jones picks up where he left off on Monday night
The Eagles overcame four penalties, including offensive interference on Nelson Agholor, and an injury to Jason Peters to get into the end zone.
Still, the Philadelphia Eagles had a chance to win their opener after rallying from a 17-point halftime deficit.
After watching the Atlanta Falcons take the 26-24 victory following a missed Philadelphia field goal and a clinching interception in the final minutes, here are five takeaways from the game: 1. But those big plays led to just a 29 yard field goal by Cody Parkey to make the score 10-3 with 7:19 left in the second quarter.
“When [special teams coordinator Dave Fipp] told me it was a 44-yarder, that was right in Cody’s wheelhouse, so we kicked it”, Kelly said.
Parkey didn’t, saying he knew from the second his foot hit the ball that it would be wide to the right.
“He’s one of those kinds of competitors that is ready for it every time. It’s my fault”.
Bradford looked completely out of rhythm and if you, gulp, picked the Eagles to win the Super Bowl you were panicking badly. “Good play. They executed it and got us on that one”. “Nothing more, nothing less”.
Jones finished Monday night’s game with 10 targets, nine catches, 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Linebacker Kiko Alonso, in his Eagles debut, made a diving interception in his own end zone. But rookie Tevin Coleman powered 20 yards through the Eagles on a draw play, getting the Falcons out of trouble and eventually setting up a 44-yard field goal by Matt Bryant, good for a 23-17 lead.
Bradford, in his first regular-season game in almost two years, was 36 of 52 for 336 yards. But the Falcons needed a running game – CHECK. Murray, Mathews and Darren Sproles combined for 16 total carries.
Trailing 20-3, the Eagles grabbed the momentum early in the third quarter on safety Walter Thurmond’s interception of Ryan, which led to running back DeMarco Murray’s first touchdown as an Eagle, an eight-yard sweep. “We got things going and once we got things rolling we kept it that way”.
The Falcons dominated the first half, stymieing the Eagles’ defense and moving the ball on the ground and through the air. Jones was in and out of the lineup in the second half, but coach Dan Quinn didn’t indicate that his star receiver was ailing.
Atlanta will look to stay undefeated in the Quinn Era as they face-off against the New York Giants next week, while Philadelphia will lick their wounds and take on the Dallas Cowboys at home in week two.
The Falcons were forced to punt, and the Eagles put together their most impressive drive of the night to that point. Two plays later, Murray streaked left end for the touchdown that would cut the lead to 20-10. For a guy who signed for $42 million, Murray ran only eight times for nine yards. Philly took the lead 24-23 with 8:37 left in the contest.
Somebody said something really powerful in the Eagles’ locker room, because they came out fired up for the second half, especially on defense. For one, he went up against one of the league’s best wideouts. He set a franchise record with four field goals of more than 50 yards, and he tied Alex Henery’s record for making 88.9 percent of his field goals (32 of 36).
