Ex-Legislator Sentenced to Prison
After facing a judge in Albany County Court, his attorney told reporters Scarborough’s $80,000 base salary is just too low.
“He filed 174 false vouchers”, Hartunian continued.
Hartunian says the federal government is cracking down on this type of misconduct.
Scarborough is the latest public servant sentenced in relation to corruption in Albany. “Former Assemblyman Scarborough betrayed the people’s trust when he repeatedly lied about when he had been in Albany to line his pockets”.”It’s obvious you represented your constituents well”, Herrick said. Those policy makers also passed tighter regulations on campaign finance disclosure.
He also pleaded guilty in May to state charges and was expected to be sentenced to a year in prison in Albany state court later on Monday, according to a statement from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The two sentences will run concurrently.
Scarborough will surrender November 10th when U.S. Marshalls will also advise him of which federal prison he will report to and serve his time. “I have let my community down”.
As another condition of his sentence, Scarborough will pay everything left over in his campaign account.
Scarborough is one of almost 30 state lawmakers that have been forced from office in the past decade because of charges of corruption or sexual harassment.
Earlier this year, the office of U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan charged both the leader of the state assembly, Democrat Sheldon Silver, and the leader of the state senate, Republican Dean Skelos, with using their posts to secure illegal payments.
“We are hoping that with today’s sentencing and with the result of this case that we are going to see the beginning of the end of abuses of the state per-diem system and perhaps improvement in the behavior of anyone who thinks that public service can be intertwined with self-service”, Hartunian said.
The former Queens lawmaker apologized for taking about $55,000 from the state.
