Dodgers activate Frias, designate Latos
His time in Dodger blue will be remembered for one thing: Latos being incredibly bad.
Sometimes parting is not such sweet sorrow: Latos clearly unhappy with the way he had been used by the Dodgers, and the Dodgers unhappy with the results of their little deadline experiment.
The Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-hander Carlos Frias from the 60-day disabled list Thursday and designated right-hander Mat Latos for assignment.
He most recently suffered the loss in the 16th inning of Tuesday’s game against the Rockies, after surrendering a home run to Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado.
Latos was 0-3 with a 6.66 ERA in six games with the Dodgers, including five starts, with 18 strikeouts and six walks in 24⅓ innings. He had been bumped from the rotation, his spot essentially taken by the man he was acquired to replace, Mike Bolsinger.
Latos went on the record stating that he hadn’t fully recovered when he made his 2014 debut.
The Dodgers placed Frias on the DL in early July after he struggled with lower back tightness in three consecutive starts. He last appeared in a major league game on June 30. He lowered his ERA from 6.12 to 4.48, and Farhan Zaidi and Andrew Friedman decided it was worth taking a chance on Latos. The Dodgers magic number to clinch the NL West division is 10 games with 17 remaining.
