Joplin’s Porsche heading to auction
Janis Joplin’s custom Porsche has been in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and now it can land in one lucky bidder’s garage.
Janis Joplin’s customized Porsche is expected to fetch more than $400,000 when it goes up for auction later this year. Now, a well-heeled fan has the opportunity to purchase her wildly painted 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet at auction.
Described by Richards to represent ‘The History of the Universe’, the dramatic artwork included such graphics as butterflies and jellyfish, as well as a portrait of Joplin with members of the band. “It’s a fantastic automobile that transcends art, pop culture and social movements, and is as groundbreaking and stunning as the renowned singer herself”. As Sotheby’s points out, such an act is generally considered sacrilege in “serious car-collecting circles”.
Janice Joplin’s Porsche isn’t the only piece of music history to go to auction in recent months. She drove it all around San Francisco, her sister recalled, and down to Los Angeles, where she recorded.
Janis Joplin was always different. After Joplin’s death in ’70, apparently the car was under wraps for a while as part of her estate.
The auto has been restored a couple of times over the years, most notably in the 1990s.
The Porsche will be auctioned by Sotheby’s on December, 10.
It’s not simply a nifty bit of music memorabilia, and that the estimated value “seems low to us, given its status as perhaps the best-known example of the 356, in an era when 356 prices have gone absolutely bananas”. “As a prelude to the Driven by Disruption sale, an exclusive six-day exhibition will open over the weekend of December 5 in Sotheby’s 10th floor galleries”.
