Detroit UD Jesuit’s 4-star PG Cassius Winston commits to Michigan State University
According to 247Sports analyst Jerry Meyer, MSU may have taken over top honors among all 2016 recruiting classes following Winston’s commitment.
They added another elite prospect to their 2016 haul on Friday, when point guard Cassius Winston announced his verbal commitment during a pep rally at his high school.
“This is a dream come true”, he said (per Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News).
Spartans coach Tom Izzo had been recruiting Winston since he was a freshman and the two have already built a relationship. Also already committed to Michigan State is 6-9 forward Nick Ward, a four-star and consensus top-50 player from Gahanna, Ohio.
Winston was reportedly torn between the Spartans, and their in-state rivals, the Michigan Wolverines.
Winston is a crafty point guard who can drive to the basket with strength for a player his size. “I let him know, but really his decision’s up to him”.
“When I went there, they play as a family”.
“That’s my guy”, Winston said of Bridges, who is expected to make his college choice October 3. There, he played in an open gym with current and former Michigan State players and attended the Spartans’ game against Oregon.
His ability to break down the game and dissect the opposition has been a calling card for him and is something that gets him plenty of attention, as Winston told Mick McCabe of the Detroit Free Press.
“He’s been great to me; he’s been loyal to me for four years”, Winston said. “I think it’s a great program for him”.
The MSU coach was a constant at Winston’s games from that point forward and when Winston called Izzo on Thursday night, it was a special moment. So that definitely was a big factor in the decision. Whatever he wants to do, I hope and pray that’s it’s the best for him. He is coming off leading U-D to back-to-back appearances in the state semifinals and averaged 24.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists during his junior season. He’s noted in various scouting reports for being able to score off the dribble and also being a good catch-and-shoot shooter with deep range.
“People love to play with him”, Donnelly said.
Michigan State’s backcourt just got a whole lot better.
