Auburn, Ole Miss take underdog roles in this week’s big SEC matchups
It wasn’t easy but they managed to fight off an experienced Mississippi State team on the road in a game they probably should have lost. You’d think after the way the Hogs played last weekend that there should be no way they lose this game. These recruits are finally becoming veterans on the team this season.
Martinez: Look, the SEC did have a rough outing in Week 2. “I got an earful from her”. Plus, the reason the SEC has claimed to be the best in the country is because of how brutal the in-conference schedule is.
The Rebels defense will likely sell out against the Alabama and run game in an effort to slow down Henry and his backfield partner Kenyan Drake. There’s still a long way to go.
But Saban remembers the Crimson Tide’s final interception against Ole Miss in last season’s game as if it happened yesterday. And, two of this week’s marquee games are SEC contests. But C.J. Johnson, an Ole Miss linebacker, intercepted a Virgil pass and ran it back 70 yards to set up another Rebels touchdown and the rout was just getting started.
With Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s (supposed) retirement, SEC football may now hold the undisputed standing as the most insecure entity in sports.
Last week beat South Florida 34-14 / this week at Boston College. The Eagles always seem to be a play or two away from beating the Seminoles. In 2013, BC put up the most points FSU allowed all season. And the defense has done a good job of creating turnovers thus far.
Florida struggled with East Carolina. But this could be the year Kentucky ends the streak.
Vaughn: Bama. Yeah, they’re at home in Bryant-Denny. Just seven points were given up all year, and an average of 230 yards per game they give up.
Secondly, Hugh Freeze has brought in talented recruiting classes year after year. “He’s really a good quarterback”.
In addition, Ole Miss will need to continue to find production out of their running backs.
The Ole Miss defense has been solid, however is there is one concern, it might be the ability to consistently stop the Alabama rushing attack, led by tailback Derrick Henry. After all, what were a lot of us talking about this time a year ago? Even though Ole Miss has barely had any success in Tuscaloosa, this is a different Rebels team, and they have a chance to make history in what should be a close game. Despite his best effort, the Crimson Tide won 33-32. 3. But, a less traditional one. Because of that and the injury to Zaire, I have to go with Georgia Tech by 3. Running backs are finding holes and gaining yards after contact.
While Harris is “immensely more experienced than he was when he played at Auburn“, as LSU Coach Les Miles said, the best thing the sophomore quarterback has going for him is tailback Leonard Fournette, who rushed 28 times for 159 yards and 3 touchdowns at Mississippi State. The questions about revenge, the perils of facing a fast-paced offense and especially suspended offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil could all wait.
After looking at tapes, Tomlinson said Ole Miss runs a similar – pretty much the same – offense as it did previous year .
Quarterback Chad Kelly is completing 72.5 percent of his passes, making accurate deep throws, and the one interception he’s thrown bounced off the hands of his target and into those of a defender. But neither of Ole Miss’ first two opponents presented the challenges Alabama.
Martinez: Call me insane , but I am a believer of the Mangum Magic. Sure, both of their wins have come down to last-minute touchdowns. “I think that is obvious in the way that he has performed”, Freeze said. They picked up wins against Arkansas (2012) and Vanderbilt (2014) wearing the combination.
