Voters to choose nominees for mayor in Bridgeport, Hartford
A former mayor of Connecticut’s largest city who spent seven years in prison for corruption narrowly won the Democratic primary on Wednesday over the incumbent, making him the likely favorite to win back the office in the November election. He came close to winning an endorsement in July from the Democratic Town Committee, whose members gave him 41 votes compared with 49 for Finch.
Ganim was sentenced to prison for steering city contracts in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in expensive wine, custom clothes, cash and home improvements when he was mayor.
Ganim, who led the City of Bridgeport from 1991 to 2003, says the numbers show the people of Bridgeport want change. People question, you know, how could he endorse the guy he locked up? “Now it’s time to move ahead”. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. He’s expected to run as a candidate of the independent Job Creation Party, which has secured a spot on the November ballot.
In Hartford, Mayor Pedro Segarra is hoping to fend off a challenge from political novice Luke Bronin, a former Rhodes scholar who worked in President Barack Obama’s administration.
Malloy said he planned to have some conversations and look into the race but that in the end “the people of Bridgeport have a decision to make”.
Ganim’s campaign manager Dan Roach said: “We are ecstatic, though it was a very close election”. He did not elaborate.
“I’m certain that a lot of the Democrats in the state right now … are shaking their heads”, Rose said. To return to the scene of the crime and to continue on as nothing happened, there’s a different perception on that. I frankly think it’s time for a woman to run this city. “And I strongly believe that everybody needs a second chance”, Luongo said. Bridgeport is a heavily Democratic city, and the victor typically goes on to become the city’s next mayor.
