Yoenis Cespedes talks upcoming free agency, NL MVP candidacy
New York should also be free of financial obligations to Bartolo Colon and Daniel Murphy, both of whom are signed to contracts that expire following the 2015 campaign.
Yoenis Cespedes has the joy of six on his mind.
Cespedes thought he was ineligible for the award after hearing many suggest he should not be considered because he has been with the Mets for only the final two months of the season.
In 2012, Cespedes signed a four-year deal with the Oakland Athletics, worth $36 million. His bat has had an explosive impact on New York’s offense in the present (and could in the future as well), but a long-term deal for the 29-year-old could further hamper an organization that has experienced financial difficulties for most of this decade. He has hit 17 home runs in 43 games and is perhaps the biggest reason the team holds a comfortable lead in the National League East. Judging by the way Cespedes has admired his home runs, he’s amazed, too. His performance with the Mets has many calling for Cespedes to be named NL MVP. “My opinion is that would be the fairest thing, he who played the whole the season (within the NL) should win (MVP)”.
Even if Cespedes isn’t awarded MVP, he’s arguably the top in-season acquisition of 2015.
If the Mets want to keep Cespedes in tow beyond this season though, they’ll have to step up with a lengthy offer.
