Day goes low again, leads by 5 shots at BMW
In-form Australian Jason Day kept up the pace with a superb 63 to lead by five shots after the second round of the BMW Championship.
Spieth, who also eagled the final hole to stay within striking distance, said Day had been so impressive in the two rounds they played together that it would have been worth the price of a ticket to watch. He powered his way around Conway Farms and was at 10-under par through 17 holes when thunderstorms halted the opening round.
As for “failing” to hole his chip shot at 18 in round one, he added: “I came in this morning and obviously when I didn’t shoot 59 I felt like everyone was disappointed in me”. He said the par-71 Conway Farms layout, with greens softened by heavy rain, was playing to a par of 66 or 67 on Friday, though not everyone agreed.
Speaking publicly for the first time since he became the subject of a sexual assault investigation, Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane said he has done nothing wrong and expects to be exonerated. Day raised his putter as the ball found the bottom of the hole, eliciting a hearty cheer from the greenside gallery.
Jordan Spieth was a few steps ahead of Day, and he could hardly contain his laughter.
“What (Jason) is doing on the golf course is something I haven’t witnessed before”.
“Selfishly, 59 would have been great, but right now I m just trying to focus on winning the tournament”.
“I probably should have known that because there’s three par-5s, but I wasn’t paying attention”, Day continued. But once again, today is finally done, and I can start focusing on tomorrow and trying to focus on what I need to do to play well tomorrow. The group of Day, Spieth and Rickie Fowler – Nos.
Spieth’s 131-shot total isn’t even good enough to put him in the top three, because Berger and Todd lit up the course with second-round scores of 64 and 63, respectively.
But more typical were the two towering shots he hit at the 18th, giving himself a long, downhill eagle putt that tracked all the way to the hole and into the cup, complete with a fist pump. He had committed to play in the season-opening Frys.com Open on October . 15-18 at Silverado in California, but will miss that tournament along with the Bridgestone America’s Golf Cup in Mexico City and his own Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. He finished second in the FedEx Cup to Billy Horschel and went on to capture the European Tour’s Race to Dubai.
