Last Christmas, gamers the world over were ecstatic to play their Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems over the holiday break, some having just received the consoles as gifts. The Lizard Squad is the gang of hackers infamous for launching a distributed denial of service attack on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live gaming services.

Many speculate that Kivimaki may have been ordered to combat cyber crime secretly as a part of his sentencing, but we kind of doubt it. While the Lizard Squad is taking pride in Kivimaki getting a slap on the wrist compared to what he was charged with, Smedley intends on seeking legal action against Kivimaki and his family.

“[The verdict] took into account the young age of the defendant at the time, his capacity to understand the harmfulness of the crimes, and the fact that he had been imprisoned for about a month during the pre-trial investigation”, said a statement from the court.

The person in question is Julius Kivimaki, better known by his alias “Zeekill”. The man’s house was flooded with thousands of phone calls from people who were given his phone number, thinking it was a hotline for a vehicle competition.

A teenager in Finland has been convicted for carrying out 50,700 “instances of aggravated computer break-ins” or hacking attacks.

The district also confiscated his PC and commanded him to handover €6,588 worth of property earned through his crimes.

The BBC reported that Judge Wilhelm Norrmann had noted that Kivimaki had only been 15 and 16 when he carried out the crimes in 2012 and 2013.

One of the advisors of Europol and other organizations regarding cybercrime expressed concern about the sentence. “It is not necessarily the place of the courts to factor in deterrence in their sentences”.

Kivimaki reportedly exploited vulnerabilities in Adobe’s ColdFusion software to compromise web servers. This bombards affected computers with a flood of internet traffic and overwhelms them in the process.

Other charges were related to the use of stolen credit card information for various online purchases, including sparkling wine.
