Nigeria rescues Boko Haram captives

Boko Haram is blamed for many hit-and-run style attacks including suicide bombings.

None of the 219 schoolgirls abducted in 2014 have been rescued, although hundreds of hostages have been freed in 2015.

The Centre for Crisis Communication, an NGO that provides crisis support, agrees with Buhari and says the government’s new position is necessary as military force alone has failed to rescue the girls.

The government is talking to Boko Haram members and it is trying to make sure they are genuine leaders, presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said in a tweet late Tuesday quoting President Muhammadu Buhari.

“And the beneficiaries of this programme numbers in terms of thousands”, Ezugwu said.

Adesina, who lamented that the insurgents, killed many people, said the Federal Government would not rule out negotiations with the sect, if it would lead to the end of terrorism. “The first impression we had was not very encouraging”.

Last week, a separate report indicated that another dozen Boko Haram captives managed to find their way to authorities in Borno, telling soldiers that they had been “abandoned” by the men who had forcibly taken them as wives.

He noted that none of the suspected Boko Haram elements that spoke with the CCC asked for any form of monetary inducement or compensation as a pre-condition for laying down their arms.

He said the troops, during clearance operations of Boko Haram hideouts, discovered and destroyed Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by Boko Haram terrorists at Sandia village on the Korode Road. Surrounded by Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Benin, all former French colonies also battling Boko Haram, Abuja came under fire during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure for not doing enough to beat back the group.

The girls have been missing for well over a year, with many fearing that they’ve been converted into suicide bombers by the terrorists.
