Miss America Pageant Apologizes To 1983 victor Vanessa Williams
A full 32 years after being crowned Miss America herself, Williams was forced to renounce the title after nude photos of the then 20-year-old became known to the public.
“I knew once the dust settled I’d get the chance to show people who I am”, she said. You have lived your life with grace and dignity and never was it more evident during the events of 1984 when you resigned.
The question and answer round of the Miss America pageant has long required contestants to face the most pressing moral questions of our times, and Sunday’s pageant was no exception.
In the end, Cantrell hung on to win, beating out first-runner up Miss Mississippi and Miss Colorado.
Before the competition started, he invited her on stage to receive the apology.
During the telecast, he said, “On behalf of today’s organization, I want to apologise to you and to your mother, Helen Williams”.
The Miss America Organization is a non-profit corporation not affiliated with the Trump pageants. When adult magazine, Penthouse, obtained the racy photos she took a year in advance, they announced their plans to buy and publish the images.
Now, 32 years later, she was invited back to appear as a judge and musical guest. Suzette Charles, then Miss New Jersey, was first runner-up, and filled in during the last weeks of Williams’ reign as “Miss America 1984 B”.
It was here that Miss Georgia, who’d performed an opera selection, “Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio”, with gusto thought she blew it.
Cantrell looked poised in an aqua mini-dress when she was asked about the National Football League “Deflatgate” scandal that engulfed New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
“I was brought up in a household where being healthy and nutrition conscious and exercising was pretty much everything”, she told local paper the Telegraph. “I’m so honored to be back”, Vanessa said.
“Did he cheat? That’s a really good question, I’m not sure”.
