Barkley with 2 touchdowns; Penn State beats Rutgers 28-3
It just didn’t think it would have to replace the two players that were supposed to fill his shoes.
A banner night that produced over 450 yards worth of offense and three rushing touchdowns made memories rush back of how the Nittany Lions used to win in the Paterno era. “A really good example of that is, you look at Georgia and Georgia Tech play each other”.
Penn State head coach James Franklin, right, celebrates with Penn… “This is a young team and we got to keep fighting to get better”, he said. Had seven explosive plays, six of which were runs. I’m not that sarcastic or clever and I happen to think Nebraska is still quite relevant. Darius Hamilton, the Knights’ top defensive lineman, had been ruled out for the game earlier in the week, per NJ.com.
“To be a running back it’s all about breaking tackles and making people miss”, Franklin said.
A fumble recovery by Penn State with just under four minutes to go officially sealed the deal on this game, the first inter-conference matchup of the season for any Big Ten teams.
It seems Penn State took one look at Rutgers and ran.
At the half, Lynch had 115 yards in nine carries and a touchdown, while true freshman Saquon Barkley went for 51 yards on 10 carries. Though he maintained he was “hopeful” all three could play, he did not sound as confident about Nelson as he did Haley and Bell.
The Nittany Lions downed Rutgers 28-3 under the Beaver Stadium lights Saturday night in front of a crowd of 103,323. A linebacker, Wartman-White sustained a season-ending knee injury in the season-opener against Temple. Penn State would take a 21-0 lead into halftime.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “His facial expression never really kind of changed. I love him to death”.
Penn State running back Akeel Lynch (22) slips past Rutgers linebacker Steve Longa (3) during the first half of an NCAA college football game in State College, Pa., Saturday, September 19, 2015.
Rutgers wide receiver Janarion Grant (1) runs with the ball as runs…
All of the juniors Flood mentioned should receive plenty of looks in a rematch of last year’s 13-10 home loss where the Rutgers offense failed to generate or sustain any drives. Grant scored two touchdowns – one on a 100-yard kick return and the second on a 55-yard punt return – in an 11-minute span of the fourth quarter in last week’s loss to Washington State.
Behind that huge rushing total, Penn State had a big offensive day, totaling 471 total offensive yards. “There’s one play in the Temple game he’s on the right hash and throws an out-cut all the way to the wide side of the field that was pretty well-covered and he delivered it perfectly with great pace”.
After weeks of turmoil, Rutgers turns its attention back to the field in time for its first Big Ten game of the season. His strength is using his hands to disengage from blockers and he has the speed and quickness to track down ball carriers all over the field. The Scarlet Knights, who were averaging 244.5 rushing yards coming into the game, were held to 65 yards on 30 attempts. “We started fast. We didn’t finish as strong”.
On defense, several guys played key roles. He’s a persistent rusher off the edge who has added weight to improve against the run.
The open question, of course, is how the Rutgers players that do make the trip-there are some still available, apparently-will react to all of this turmoil. He said the honor was equal to the scholarship he received from head coach James Franklin last season.
“Maybe in Pop Warner, where nobody knows what they’re doing and you’re the fastest player”, Lynch said when asked if he had ever seen that much room on a run.
