Quake jolts Big Bear area of Southern California
According to San Bernardino Fire Big Bear dispatchers, there were no reports of damage in the area.
The temblor, initially reported as a magnitude-4.5 but later downgraded to 4.0, struck at 9:10 a.m.at a depth of 6.8 miles, its epicenter seven miles south-southeast of Big Bear Lake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“M4.5 Big Bear EQ close to San Andreas, but preliminary focal mechanism shows oblique normal faulting, not SAF type”, Jones said. It was located some 4 1/2 miles northeast of the mountain community of Forest Falls.
In the last 10 days, there has been one quake of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
Furthermore, she tweeted to The Desert Sun there’s a “slight chance of a larger (earthquake)”.
Meanwhile, San Bernardino County Supervisor Josie Gonzales reported the quake rattled for 20 seconds.
KTLA viewers reported that they felt shaking in Moreno Valley, Riverside, Hemet, Yucaipa and Burbank.
About four minutes after the initial temblor, a quake with a magnitude of 2.4 struck the same area, according to USGS.
Law enforcement agencies contacted by CNN said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
