Obama aiming to accept 10000 more Syrian refugees into the US
Germany recently announced it would accept up to 800,000 refugees, and the United Kingdom said it would take in some 20,000.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said her country welcomes Syrian refugees.
He added that the UNHCR is sending prefabricated housing units for 300 refugee families to Hungary.
The bulk of the money – 12.5 million euros – will go towards educating around 200,000 Syrian children in Arabic while the remainder will provide food vouchers for 41,000 living in three refugee camps in Turkey.
“Refugees are subject to the highest level of security checks of any category of traveler to the United States“, another State Department official told reporters.
Currently, the United States admits 70,000 refugees from around the world each year and will increase to 75,000 annually beginning in October.
House Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley warned the administration was considering “opening the floodgates” to refugees and “using emergency authority” to go above the numbers they have proposed, and has not ruled out paroling thousands of Syrians into the U.S.
Despite the setback, Kanawati said his family plans to launch a new effort to get his relatives resettled in the United States.
The U.S. was “the biggest” donor of aid to Syria and, since the outbreak of the conflict there, it has contributed more than $4 billion in humanitarian assistance, according to the White House. Most come through the refugee resettlement program, which caters to people outside the U.S. In this case, they may be in the refugee camps that are proliferating in Europe.
It’s a feeling of acceptance these former refugees say everyone from Syria is hoping for right now. Earnest said that is one reason why dramatically increasing the number of people admitted, or trying to expedite the process of admission, would be unlikely to work.
The announcement comes a day after Director of National Intelligence James Clapper expressed “huge concern” that Islamic State terrorists might infiltrate the crowds of thousands of Syrian refugees flocking to Europe and the United States to escape the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Like all refugees, fleeing their country means leaving everything behind. Earnest said the U.S.is on track to allow 1,500 Syrians by the end of current the fiscal year.
Among the European countries receiving the fewest asylum requests are Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Iceland.
“We know the scale of this problem, and it’s significant, there are millions of people who have been driven from their homes because of this violence”.
