Giants get back Cain, but shut out again by Diamondbacks 6-0
“As long as you’re still alive, you’ve got to believe”.
Attendance: The Giants announced their 400th consecutive sellout.
Leake (10-9) took the loss for San Francisco, which began the day 8 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. The Giants have lost three of their past four games.
“We can’t afford any (more) losses”, said losing pitcher Madison Bumgarner.
Bumgarner, who has thrown 197 innings following his 270-inning 2014 campaign, doesn’t need to throw another pitch until Spring Training 2016 – he can go into the offseason with the knowledge that he did far more than his fair share this season.
De La Rosa, coming off one of his worst starts, allowed a hit over 5 2/3 innings. “We’re going to hold him back from that, ” Bochy said.
The Giants would like to see him throw in multiple games during the last two weeks of the season to have a better idea of what Cain can bring to the party in 2016. It certainly helped that until the ninth inning, all of those at bats came with two outs, minimizing the chances for any damage. Left-hander Andrew Chafin took over and got Belt to ground out.
Randall Delgado, Daniel Hudson and Brad Ziegler each threw a scoreless inning, with Ziegler recording his 27th save, and 25th in succession.
Third baseman Jake Lamb and shortstop Chris Owings each had two hits for the Diamondbacks, whose eighth road win against the Giants matched a franchise record.
Bumgarner beat the Diamondbacks twice this season and pitched in and out of two jams early before running into trouble in the sixth.
Arizona Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt, left, scores from third…
Center fielder A.J. Pollock, right fielder Ender Inciarte and left fielder David Peralta each had three hits as the Diamondbacks improved to 8-1 in San Francisco this season with a sixth consecutive win. He has pitched well in five of his six starts for the Giants, allowing just 12 runs in those games.
“Not good enough to win”, Bumgarner said.
So how should the Giants prepare for their rematch game against the Diamondbacks?
Belt was noticeably shaken up during a play Tuesday night against Cincinnati when he dove into second base and hit his head against an infielder’s knee. He went 0-for-3 before calling it a night. RHP Tim Hudson, who has been bothered lately by a troublesome hip, threw a bullpen session before the game and told reporters he should be able to make his next scheduled start in the series finale Sunday. He walked three and struck out seven. The Giants had won eight of their previous 11 games, outscoring their opponents 67-36 during that stretch.NOTES: The Diamondbacks entered the game with a 1.66 ERA in seven games in San Francisco this season.
