Australian PM-elect Turnbull says to focus on the economy

Turnbull split his coalition and lost the party leadership in 2009 over his support for a then-Labor Party government’s proposal to make industrial polluters pay for the carbon gas emissions that they produced through an emissions permit trading scheme.

Turnbull – whose electorate of Wentworth has the largest Jewish population of any electorate in NSW – said this has been a “very sobering experience”.

He was previously toppled as leader of the conservative Liberal Party by Abbott in 2009.

Following his election as prime minister in 2013, Mr Abbott moved indigenous affairs into his department.

As Abbott supporters seethe with anger over the result of the leadership change, Mr Turnbull has promised to govern in a consultative manner.

“My record of achievement under Mr Abbott, working with Mr Abbott in policy as a member of the National Security Committee of Cabinet and the ERC I think speak for themselves”, he said.

“Really, the party gave a lot of notice to (Mr) Abbott, but he still held a hard line on a raft of social policy issues, including marriage equality”, Dr Williams said.

Asked if he would include more women in the cabinet, Mr Turnbull would say only “there is no greater enthusiast than me for seeing women in positions of power and influence in parliament, in ministries right across the country”.
