Manchester United’s Luke Shaw thanks hospital staff following leg break
PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno broke down in tears when he visited Luke Shaw in hospital to apologise to the Manchester United full-back for breaking his leg.
Defender Shaw, 20, is recovering from surgery on the double fracture he suffered in the 2-1 Champions League loss on Tuesday.
With Shaw absent, Louis van Gaal has to pick a new left-back.
Radcliffe, who worked with Shaw at Southampton before joining him for a year-long spell at Old Trafford, told ESPN: “Luke has a great family around him and they will be very important in the first few days after this injury. The main thing is how the development of the rehabilitation shall go”.
While Shaw is set to miss plenty of time, Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones are set to return to the squad, with the former expected to play and the latter training with the group, per the club’s official Twitter account. It will be today (Friday) or tomorrow (Saturday) then he will go to a private clinic in Manchester.
Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young were cited by Van Gaal as potential replacements on the left side of defense.
Van Gaal’s counterpart, Phillip Cocu said it was not the intention of Moreno to injury Shaw during the tackle.
Speaking in a press conference, the Manchester United manager said: “When I said he is for the future I meant at 19, a player is not fully developed, but I didn’t say I won’t count on him“. We are a strong team unit so it cuts into you. I can’t do anything else right now, you know, I just say I pray to god every game before the match that nothing happens to me or my colleagues, this kind of situation. I said (in pre-season) this will be the season of Luke Shaw but now it is finished almost .
Such a quest is still some distance off, Rooney’s 185 career Premier League goals placing him two behind second placed Andy Cole and way behind all-time leading scorer Alan Shearer and his 260.
Van Gaal is confident away victories will soon start materialising and stressed he would not make any changes to the way he prepared his team for the trip to St. Mary’s.
