Emmys 2015: What Is ‘Olive Kitteridge’ Anyway?
It was almost a clean sweep for HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge” at the Emmy Awards, where it took home six out of its 13 nominations.
(Five of its awards were presented live.) Jane Anderson won first for writing the show; Lisa Cholodenko won for its direction; Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins won for their lead performances as the Kitteridges; and the series itself capped the run off by winning the award for Outstanding Miniseries. First, that miniseries’ six statuettes helped HBO somewhat compensate for “Game of Thrones” winning a boatload of awards for its weakest – and, some argue, most misogynistic – season yet. “I want to say thank you Frances McDormand for this opportunity and calling me and saying I want you to come on this journey with me”.
The 55-year-old Mom actress was joined on the carpet by Olive Kitteridge stars Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins.
Olive Kitteredge tells the poignantly sweet, acerbically amusing and devastatingly tragic story of a seemingly placid New England town wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, told through the lens of Olive (Frances McDormand), whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and staunch moral center. “Sometimes that’s enough. Thank you”. “Celebrating hilarious women and letting the Internet weigh in on who looks the worst”. Coincidentally, both won in directing categories, which right there should teach the backwards movie industry a thing or two about women’s ability to step behind the camera. We’ll see her at the 2016 Emmys.
