Texas man arrested after falsely accusing #BlackLivesMatter supporters of
Scott Lattin, a disabled veteran, told Whitney police on September 8 someone tagged his truck with “Black Lives Matter” and other graffiti because he displayed pro-police messages and symbols on his pickup.
Lattin was charged with making a false report and police contend he’s responsible for the damage to his truck.
“We had initial video when the officers took the report and then … we saw [the KDFW] story …” “When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction”, Bentley said.
However, new information reveals that the man, Scott Lattin, vandalized his truck himself, Huffington Post reports.
Lattin told KDFW that the allegations are “absolutely not true”. He denied it, though the police affidavit says he admitted to damaging the inside of his truck for insurance purposes.
The blue ribbons and messages supporting law enforcement on the truck were part of the “blue lives matter” movement, spurred by the death of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth’s murder.
“Very disturbing”, Whitney Police Chief Chris Bentley told KDFW-TV.
When the vandalism was first reported, Lattin said: ‘Engage me in a dialogue, don’t destroy my stuff.
Lattin’s 18-year-old son, Jason, who told Fox4 during the initial report that he wanted to become a police officer, declined to comment on his father’s arrest.
Chief Bentley said the man faces misdemeanor charges for the hoax, and the public should stop pledging money to the account, which has accrued over $6,000 in donations. “And for them to have been deceived?” Additionally, vehicle dealers and body shops offered to pitch in to make repairs. His family said about $5000 of damage was done, and there was a GoFundMe page for them that people gave to. “This is just wrong”, said Marty Rosseau, Whitney resident.
