Just In: Haverhill mill hit by 7-alarm fire
A 7-alarm fire broke out in an abandoned mill Sunday.
Around 7 p.m., a Newton firefighter on scene said, “This fire is very far from under control”. Firefighters from as far away as Hampton and Londonderry were sent in to assist.
Smoke could be seen from miles away, including Boston some 20 miles by air from the fire. A number of fire watchers stated that the building, which was abandoned and vacant for a long period of time, appeared to be completely destroyed.
The fire also caused delays on the MBTA’s Haverhill line which runs to North Station.
According to the Fire Department’s Facebook page, the SMART truck travels all over New England responding to large fires and disasters.
Patch will update this post when more information becomes available. Mayor James Fiorentini tells WBZ-TV the building was once a cotton mill and was later used for textile-dyeing.
No injuries had been reported.
