(Wyo.)-Falk Leads Washington State Over Wyoming 31-14
ABOUT WYOMING (0-2): Coffman, who sat out the 2014 season after transferring from Indiana, will be playing just his second game under center for the Cowboys.
But if you’re going to look at this game realistically – and some would say cynically and pessimistically – the Cougars made a bad Wyoming team look good. But they should be pleased with the way their defense played.
Falk finished with 303 yards after completing 37 of his 45 passes; he had two touchdowns and one interception, which came about when Falk threw the ball directly to a defender when he and Gabe Marks appeared to have a communication issue as WSU was pushing the pace early in the second half.
Ninety-four of sophomore running back Brian Hill’s 139 rushing yards came before halftime.
“One of the brightest spots is it was a real team effort”, coach Mike Leach said. “Week two we played fast, weren’t hesitant, sloppy at times but we did fly around”.
Harrington galvanized a sluggish Cougars offense with a 19-yard run on a drive that ended with a 1-yard quarterback sneak touchdown by Luke Falk, then dialed up a highlight reel play to put WSU ahead 21-14 at the half by dancing his way through the entire Cowboys’ defense and dashing down the left sideline on a 36-yard score.
Wyoming scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Coffman to Tanner Gentry on the first possession of the game.
The shutout the defense pitched in the second half covered for WSU’s offense, which stagnated in the third quarter before regaining its footing with 10 points in the fourth. It’s hard to picture a scenario in which he throws for fewer than 350 yards against the Cougs.
North Dakota converted WR John Santiago ran for 178 yards, two touchdowns, and picked apart for 330 passing yards by EMU’s backup quarterback. Gentry has seven grabs for 127 yards, while Maulhardt added ten catches for 113 yards. Maulhardt’s receiving total and 10 catches were both career highs.
But Falk only averaged 6.7 yards per attempt and took three sacks, two in the third quarter.
The Cowboys return home to open Mountain West play next Saturday against the New Mexico Lobos. He stuffed Hill again, with help from Destiny Vaeao, on third-and-2 to force a three-and-out on Wyoming’s first drive of the second half. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.in War Memorial Stadium.
