Tonight’s Emmy Awards could be one for history books
The First option is to watch the show online via FOX Now, which can be accessed on computer by clicking here. But given the shifts in the major awards this year, the Emmy voters will have to be completely stuck in the past to keep giving them to the same faces.
So this awards ceremony comes at a turning point for the awards and the TV industry in general. Gossip Cop will continuously update as the winners are announced.
Here’s a short list of the big issues to watch for in this year’s Emmys contest and why they’re so important to the future of television.
Can anyone take down “Modern Family“? “The Emmys, we have recurring shows and reality and comedic series”, says Don Mischer, executive producer of the Emmy telecast. A win on Sunday would put it in the record books, but Amazon’s zeitgeist-grabbing hit Transparent is poised to play spoiler. The premium cable network still needs 16 more wins to best CBS’s 44-Emmy haul in 1974, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility, given the network’s nominations in 21 categories. Here’s my list of which shows and stars I think should win, and my predictions (OK, guesses) about what ones will win.
Viola, Taraji or Tatiana?
Another “Mad Men” actor, Elisabeth Moss, is nominated for best lead actress in a drama.
When it came to diversity, Samberg called out nominees like Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson.
Sentiment appears to favor stylish 1960s-era advertising show “Mad Men” as it bids for a record fifth drama series win to crown its final season. A divided vote among those who want to make diversity history at the Emmys could hand the award to a Hollywood favorite by default.
Who will win: Julia Louis-Drefyus’ name is pretty much engraved on this thing.
Janney was honored as best supporting actress in a comedy for her role as a dysfunctional parent in “Mom“.
It doesn’t have the glamour or prestige of the Oscars or the Tonys, and locally it will have to compete with the Seahawks game, but if you love television you might want to tune in to see who wins.
Amy Schumer is done with her hosting days.
David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert or John Oliver? It would mark the first time an African-American actress has won in this prominent category.
Andy Samberg is the host of TV’s biggest, and apparently hottest, night. Peter Dinklage best chance was last season, and Jim Carter just doesn’t seize the imagination. Here, the weight of TV talk show legacy may well beat the upstart newcomer. The prediction for this category is that Jon Hamm will be the victor . As Gossip Cop previously noted, Hamm, who’s also up for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt“, has been nominated more than a dozen times for Emmy Awards, but has never won. But he hasn’t won once. Previously, a small number of the academy’s 18,000 members watched DVDs of the nominated best comedy and drama series and voted by paper ballot, said O’Neil, author of “The Emmys” reference book.
