Pleasant Hill couple claim $1 million Powerball ticket prize
“I was in a hurry because I was on the way to mass”, Richard Martin of Pleasant Hill said as he and his wife claimed their prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Clive.
“On the way out the door, he thought to himself, “‘ Well, I’ll just go ahead and buy a lottery ticket.’ It was a quick pick”.
She keyed in the numbers on the lottery website as well.
Two Powerball tickets bought in Virginia each have won $2 million.
His wife had a similar reaction: “It just didn’t register”, she said.
The ticket, purchased for Saturday’s drawing at the Wawa at 2501 Virginia Beach Blvd., would have been worth $1 million, but the owner paid an extra $1 for Power Play, according to a Virginia Lottery news release. “I couldn’t even believe it”. Since no ticket matched all six numbers to win the jackpot, the jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing grows to an estimated $235 million.
New Jersey was one of three states where a $1 million ticket was sold along with Maryland and California. The retailer will receive a bonus of more than $5,000 for selling the winning ticket.
The winning numbers in Saturday’s drawing were 12-17-26-43-48 and the Powerball number was 24.
“Mondays are always really busy days”, she said.
