Vermont state trooper died from heatstroke, autopsy says
Kyle D. Young, 28, the Watertown-area native who died last week while on a training mission with the Vermont State Police, died of “exertional heat stroke”, the Vermont medical examiner ruled.
Medical examiners said Young died within minutes.
He collapsed about 2 p.m. Thursday while auditioning for the state police tactical team at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho.
Young’s stepfather says it was an honor to see everyone come out to show their support.
Young graduated from the police academy in January and was an Afghanistan-Iraqi War veteran.
He said additional information is needed before a final report can be issued and “a complete understanding of the circumstances that led to the death of Trooper Young is determined”.
Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn announced a review of police policies in response to the death. His family could not immediately be reached for comment.
Young’s body was returned to his family in Watertown Sunday.
Calling hours will be held at the Cummings Funeral Home in Watertown Tuesday.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1 p.m.at Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street in Brownville.
The high temperature Thursday in Burlington was 86 degrees, setting a new record for the date, according to the National Weather Service.
