Turnbull Sworn in as New Australia PM
Ms Bishop, who is foreign affairs minister and was re-elected as deputy leader on Monday, said it was a hard time for Mr Abbott.
Turnbull has still not announced his new cabinet arrangements but said his final decision will be made over the weekend.
A ReachTEL poll for the Seven Network shows Mr Turnbull leading Mr Shorten 62-38 per cent as preferred prime minister, nearly reversing the margin the opposition leader had over Mr Abbott.
Abbott received a call from US President Barack Obama thanking him for his support in the coalition against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
“I care about getting a good deal for regional Australia, and I support a Prime Minister who can achieve that”, he said.

Mr Dutton is reported to have offered to step down from his job via a text message to the Prime Minister over night, however, there is no indication as yet if Mr Turnbull has accepted the offer. “They are each means of resolving the matter – one, I grant you is more expensive but, nonetheless, it is a very legitimate and democratic way of dealing with it”.
Mr Turnbull’s honeymoon might not last long though; he’s already indicated he’ll put his own opinions on immigration and climate change to one side for the sake of party unity, keeping the downgraded target to reduce emissions by 26 percent by 2030.
He said there was “no greater enthusiast than me for seeing more women in positions of power”, but he refused to say more about the Cabinet talks.
The snap vote came after Turnbull publicly challenged Abbott earlier on Monday, criticizing the latter’s leadership style and his inability to pass reforms in parliament.
As Abbott supporters seethe with anger over the result of the leadership change, Mr Turnbull has promised to govern in a consultative manner.
“We also welcome the Greens’ additional comments which say the best option for a plebiscite is for a parliamentary committee to work with the electoral commission to ensure it is fair and balanced, and for it to be held at the next election”.
