FG charges Senate President, Saraki for lying in Assets Declaration Form

Following the trial, opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday accused the President Buhari-led APC administration of despotism and desperation to remove Saraki.

The President, Muhammadu Buhari has refused to dabble into the current controversy and corruption allegations surrounding the Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Shehu added that “The President has vowed to respect the rule of law and this is what he is doing by staying out of this matter”.

Senators from across the political divide on Sunday night resolved to defend the Senate under the leadership of Saraki from incursion from what they call “a cabal” in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Senate President’s wife, Toyin, was also recently invited for interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering and looting of Kwara State government funds, when her husband was governor. “This therefore is purely a judicial process and has nothing to do with the Presidency”, the statement noted.

While recalling that there was an earlier order of the federal high court which summoned the parties last Monday, he also queried why the code of Conduct Bureau still went ahead with prosecution.

President of YCY, Aremo Oladotun Hassan, who addressed a press conference in Abuja on Monday, condemned the action of the tribunal, whose conduct he said smacks of desperation for power at all costs by few oligarchs at the expense of Nigerians. “His suggestion, however, did not see the light of day as we resolved to use other channels to address the challenge.”.

According to him, “we believe he will come out of it. You are presumed innocent until proven otherwise”.

“This tribunal has called on the defendant to appear before it and stand trial”, tribunal judge Danladi Umar said in his ruling in Abuja.
