City reports West Nile case
“To reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus, the Health Department will spray pesticide from trucks in parts of Queens and Brooklyn”, says the DOH.
The Northwest Mosquito and Vector Control District will spray to kill adult mosquitoes in Corona early Wednesday and Thursday, September 23 and 24. He said people should empty out any standing water around their home.
This marks the first human case in Allegheny County this year.
Two from the St. Louis area and one from Pettis County died from the complications of the virus they contracted last month.
West Nile virus can be transmitted to birds, animals and humans from infected mosquitoes.
Symptoms of the infection are often mild and may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death. Repellents are an important tool to assist people in protecting themselves from mosquito-borne diseases. Be sure to follow product directions carefully and consult with your child’s doctor prior to using on children.
