MP Shocker : Road built over a drunk man in pothole
The deceased has been identified as Latori Barman, a resident of Khadra village.
The officer also divulged at very heavy machines were being used in the road construction. “The workers must not have noticed him while filling the pothole with bitumen”, he added.
The incident is said to have come to light after some people noticed the man’s arm sticking out of the road. Villagers recovered the body and sent to autopsy.
The incident sparked agitation by villagers which was brought to rest after police assurance. They only cleared the road after the senior officials intervened and assured strict action against the construction company.
According to the Times of India, the driver of the dumper and a labourer have both been arrested in connection with the death.
According to police, Barman had gone to the fair in Rishi Panchmi with his wife, who stayed the night at her parent’s house.
“It was dark and there were no warning signs. He would have been walking in an inebriated condition when he fell into the pit… and lost consciousness”, an investigating officer said.
Contract workers adopt to road construction works during the nights when traffic density is less.
The TOI report quotes the district collector of Katni, where the incident took place, as saying that the man’s kin will be given Rs 50,000 as compensation.
