Anthony Bennett: Latest News, Rumors, Speculation Surrounding Timberwolves PF
Since being drafted No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2013 National Basketball Association Draft, Anthony Bennett has faced lofty expectations while his career has been derailed by injury. He played in 57 games in his first season with the T-Wolves (his second in the NBA), averaging 5.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
There simply isn’t much opportunity there with so much depth in the frontcourt, even though team owner Glen Taylor recently indicated to Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 that Bennett wasn’t necessarily on his way out of Minnesota: “We shouldn’t assume he’d go….” Bennett was part of the Kevin Love trade that brought Andrew Wiggins to Minnesota last season, and now, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Timberwolves are cutting ties with the young forward after just one season.
They would have had to pay him more than $7 million for the 2016-17 season if they had decided by the end of the October to exercise his option for that season. Brown turned eyes in Summer League and he could be the player that Minnesota retains for the 15th roster spot, depending on what they decide to do with new acquisition Damjan Rudez. But Pro Basketball Talk notes the Wolves are “stacked up front”. They have a five-man big rotation already of Karl-Anthony Towns, Kevin Garnett, Gorgui Dieng, Nikola Pekovic, and Adreian Payne.
Bennett, still just 22 years old, would become a free agent if he clears waivers.
But some team should give him a shot.
Alas, Cleveland’s mistake in the draft has impacted most fans’ opinion of Bennett.
But that is apparently not going to be in Minnesota.
