Wimbledon facts – day 11
“They helped me rather than hindered me”, said Federer who said he was looking forward to meeting Murray. She’s the first Spanish woman to advance to the Wimbledon final since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1996. Then again, there was no shame in a 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-4 11-9 defeat against a daring man playing one of the matches of his life in a contest dubbed “the battle of the backhands”. In doubles, Hingis and Sania Mirza defeated the American pair of Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears 6-1, 6-2.
The Scot advanced 6-4 7-5 6-4 on Center Court over the Canadian, a loser to one of the Murray brothers for the second time in three days.
Murray serves well to comfortably hold his first game as he levels score. Murray’s last meeting with Federer.
It was the last time that the 17-time Swiss grand slam champion had won a major title.
With the last three winners of Wimbledon in the final four, along with a surprising fourth participant, there is set to be plenty of action in Friday’s draw.
Djokovic, who also won Wimbledon in 2011, now has a remarkable 47-3 record in 2015 and one more win would give the reigning Australian Open champion his second Grand Slam of 2015.
It will be Federer’s 10th semifinal appearance at the All England Club. To get to the semi-finals, Murray hasn’t had to beat a player inside the top 20.
It felt like Wimbledon just started, but after a week-and-a-half of tennis, it is just about time for everyone to hang up their white shorts, white shirts and white tennis shoes and for a champion to be crowned.
France’s 1997 Wimbledon finalist Pioline backed Gasquet to go toe-to-toe with top seed and world No 1 Djokovic in his second semi-final at SW19.
Djokovic handled Gasquet’s fantastic backhand well enough to keep the 21st-seeded Frenchman from pulling off another upset. With the Spaniard seeded a low 10th, he was expected to meet Andy Murray in the quarter finals.
“For both Andy and Roger, this court is probably the most famous court and their favourite court as well so those matches can only play a small part”.
The 29-year-old required five sets, with the deciding set lasting 20 games, to edge out Wawrinka; this came after he avenged his heartbreaking five-set loss to Kyrgios at the All England Club in the second round a year ago.
At this years French Open, Djokovic eliminated Gasquet in straight sets. Djokovic then found his form to take a 4-2 lead, before reeling off three straight points to take the first set.
The seven-time champion has beaten Gilles Simon, Roberto Bautista Agut and Sam Groth to reach the semi-finals and against Simon won his 116th consecutive service game to break a record set by Wayne Arthurs in 1999.
Djokovic needs only one more set to reach the Wimbledon final for the fourth time.
Gasquet had the advantage of serving first and Wawrinka saved two match points before sending his famed backhand long and bowing out.
The world No. 1 triumphed 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-4 to reach his 17th grand slam final.
Gasquet surprisingly beat Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals, and he’s doing well so far on Centre Court against Djokovic.
Djokovic was at his clinical best on Friday, giving a wonderful performance that should be an indication to his Sunday opponent that the final will be a challenge.
