Derby County and Burnley contest goalless draw
Burnley spurned a golden opportunity to nick the points when Vokes spooned Boyd’s pass over the bar from inside the area as Sean Dyche’s men stood up to Derby’s late pressure, moving third in the table on a frustrating evening for the home side.
Richard Keogh went close with two headers but not until the final minute was Tom Heaton properly tested, as the Burnley goalkeeper palmed clear Chris Martin’s effort from long range.
Dyche has won promotion from the Championship with Burnley and he was impressed by Derby, who he thinks are more than capable of emulating his 2013-14 team.
Barton, probably not expected to be involved at all, did find himself on the bench but the main worry of the night was the loss of Gray in the first half, which was short of chances, when he was forced off due to a hamstring injury. “I said to them at half-time we need to find that balance, but give credit to Derby for that”.
“We couldn’t attack as much as we’d liked”.
Clement enjoyed back-to-back victories, his first since taking charge during the summer, in the two matches since the resumption of the Sky Bet Championship following the worldwide break but the former Chelsea, Paris St Germain and Real Madrid assistant has still not tasted success in four outings at the iPro Stadium, drawing three times.
Clement went on to say that given their organisation and quality it’s obviously going to be another “big test” for the side but we’ve had tests so far and have shown positives and improvements, so that’s exactly what he’s looking for again.
“There’s all sorts of different thoughts, a couple of years ago it was nearly to the point that you can’t win without possession”, the Burnley boss said.
Early in the second half Jacob Butterfield burst forwards from midfield for Derby but blasted a shot wide of the target. They are an organised team and have a set style and formation in the way that they play; it’ll be tough but we’re confident we can get the job done’. “We have to practise more to overcome it”.
