Marisa Tomei to Play Aunt May in New ‘Spider-Man’ Movie
Variety reports that Marisa Tomei will now play the relative who cares for the orphaned youth.
In the comics, Aunt May is usually depicted as an elderly woman, but-like Spider-Man himself-she keeps getting younger and younger in these movies.
Insiders reveal that actress Marisa Tomei is set to play Aunt May beside Tom Holland in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studio’s latest “Spider-Man” film.
Sony and Marvel are yet to comment on the casting.
Given that that series eventually killed off Peter Parker, only to replace him with the biracial Miles Morales, perhaps fans of that character could take heart that maybe the cinematic Spidey won’t always be as white as he’s been in his current three incarnations.
At this stage there is no indication if the part will include suggestions made past year she will have more of a background in espionage, when there were rumours a whole film was going to be made around the character by Sony.
Spider-Man is scheduled for release July 28, 2017.
Tomei, who has gravitated towards indie fare like “Cyrus” and “The Wrestler” in recent years, is on a hot streak in Hollywood, having also landed a recurring role on the next season of the hit Fox drama, “Empire“.
Aunt May has traditionally been played by much older actresses in Spider-Man’s previous adventures, with Rosemary Harris inhabiting the role at 75 and Sally Field at 66.
