#ShoutYourAbortion: Hashtag goes viral over Planned Parenthood funding cuts
People had been taking to the hashtag, created by writer Lindy West, to share their stories and challenge the stigma around abortion.
The fight over abortion and possibly defunding Planned Parenthood has recently centered around a social media hashtag.
Women concerned about Republican efforts to take funding away from Planned Parenthood have taken to social media with a hashtag encouraging others to “shout your abortion”.
Bonow, one of the creators of the hashtag, told Buzzfeed that shared her experience of receiving an abortion on Facebook “on a whim” but also in order to “vocally align myself with Planned Parenthood”.
‘Plenty of people still believe that on some level – if you are a good woman – abortion is a choice which should be accompanied by some level of sadness, shame, or regret’.
See the tweets below, and let us know in the comments: What do you think of these revelations on Twitter?
But on Bonow’s Facebook page, the feminist went beyond just using a hashtag, and boasted that before she aborted her child previous year , she announced her decision to everyone in The Laurelton, a historically liberal apartment building in Seattle. “Why wouldn’t I be happy that I was not forced to become a mother?”
Amelia insists that the aim of the campaign was to promote discussion and to remove the stigma surrounding abortions.
But he wasn’t done there – and as more abuse flooded in for his comments, he even began questioning if the women tweeting him had even had abortions themselves.
Char Miller wrote on the Shout Your Abortion Facebook page that she was 42 when she opted for an abortion.
“Ugh”, wrote Twitter user comcatholicgirl. Because we are grown ass women, after all.
