United Airlines grounds all flights around the world
As of Wednesday afternoon, the company had canceled 61 flights and delayed another 1,162, the Wall Street Journal reported.
“We experienced a network connectivity issue this morning”, United said by email.
The Chicago-based carrier has struggled with occasional computer faults since the 2010 merger between ex- parent UAL Corp. and Continental Airlines created the current parent company, United Continental.
United flights were also grounded on June 2 due to “automation issues”. An estimated 3,500 flights in more than 300 locations worldwide from coast-to-coast were delayed on some scale.
According to multiple reports, United’s check-in system went down about about 6 a.m. MDT. “Everything looks good from here on out”.
“The issue we are experiencing is an internal technical issue and is not the result of a cyber breach”, the exchange said in a message posted on social media website Twitter.
Most travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport managed to get to their destinations despite United Airlines grounding all of its planes Wednesday.
Update 4: A United spokesperson confirmed that flights are restored.
A technical issue caused airport gridlock for United Airlines planes around the country including in Connecticut.
After this morning’s problems, United apologized to customers and said they could change travel plans without being charged the usual $200 fee for changing reservations.
But the problems from Wednesday morning’s glitch at United will likely to ripple throughout the day and even into Thursday, said James Record, a professor of aviation at Dowling College. “The airline has been extremely focused on handling any schedule adjustments to address connections at other airports”.
In an emailed statement, the carrier said it’s restoring flight operations and recovering from “network connectivity issues”, without providing further details on the problem.
Anyone without a printed boarding pass, or some sort of printed receipt or itinerary that verifies a ticket has been purchased, is apparently being told they are unable to check in to their flight.
