Hugh Jackman: Playing a pirate was just marvelous
I admit I was a total “Hook” fan growing up. “If you tackle Neverland, it has to be eccentric, and no one does that like the Brits”.
And makes the insightful admission that he thinks he’s pretty boring.
“Joe’s point is Neverland is the child’s imagination where anything is possible”. But when we were going to the meetings we spent most of it laughing.
Cinematic journeys in the world of J. M. Barrie’s creation are not new. I think that’s why it obviously speaks to adults forever.
From here on, the film becomes a seriously extended chase that possesses hefty CGI-propelled dynamics but absolutely no suspense and a very limited sense of fun. And he’d take people by surprise then run you through. And superimposed on my body was Louis XIV’s actual costume. After 17 years playing the clawed comic book character in seven films, Jackman confirms there will be another untitled Wolverine movie in 2017. “He’s a natural actor, and his heart and his warmth really is the centre of the movie, I think”. “He’s a little bit bored, sad, lonely and frightened”.
The Oscar nominee makes a dramatic transformation in his latest role as the pirate Blackbeard in Pan, an origin story of sorts for the fictional boy who never grows up, Peter Pan.
Hugh. No I was definitely protective [laughs].
“I knew it was going to be just eccentric enough”, Jackman says.
Next up, he’s returning to the Australian stage for the first time in 10 years with his cabaret-style show Hugh Jackman: From Broadway to Oz. And he carries the film. “Hey, I dress up and pretend to be someone else for a living”, he counters, “so you know the kid is still well and truly alive in me”. Here’s how they got on.
And speaking of the atmosphere on set I understand there was a lot of music played to keep the energy up.
And your entrance song as well to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was unexpected. Did you have to relearn the words? “It was such a shock to them but a shock to me too whenever I looked in the mirror”.

Now this universe has been established would you like to see it continue? There, he finds both fun fun & dangers, & ultimately discovers his destiny – to develop in to the hero who shall be endlessly referred to as Peter Pan. But just as P.J. Hogan’s similarly grandiose and ambitious Peter Pan surprisingly flopped in 2003, this one may also be headed for a low-altitude flight. He likes to rehearse. He told me how Keira Knightley, who was the lead, used to have go and greet actors when they arrived on set for the first time, welcome them to the group. No matter what size role you had we were all in there together.
HUGH Jackman has accomplished something quite rare in Hollywood.
And I understand not much green screen? Recaptured, he soon finds himself in Blackbeard’s captain’s quarters, where he explains to Peter that an ancient prophecy foretold a chosen one with the ability to fly, the child of a fairy prince and human mother who would someday come to defeat him.
“I probably got more from him than he got from me. We take things for granted and forget how incredible the world is because we worry about paying our rent”.
Overweight and uninspired Peter Pan films have succeeded before, most notably the 1991 Hook, one of Steven Spielberg’s worst efforts.
But not that kind of magic.
And with Australia set to open their Rugby World Cup campaign against Fiji later this week, Jackman also had a message for his countrymen: “R est up, Wednesday’s the day – go get ’em, Wallabies”.
