Senate GOP unveils measure to fund government through December 11
Tuesday’s vote came with Republicans trying to halt the $450 million in federal funding that goes yearly to Planned Parenthood, about a third of its overall budget. The House approved the legislation in May.
The House passed the bill in May by a vote of 242-184, with four Democrats joining the vast majority of Republicans to support the measure. She added that the “truest test to date of Democrats’ allegiances” will occur when the Senate votes on her recently passed legislation to divest Planned Parenthood clinics that perform abortions of federal funding for one year.
Critics of the women’s-health agency say that a series of controversial, undercover videos show that Planned Parenthood harvests the tissue of aborted fetuses in order to turn a profit, a claim the organization denies. The proposal – which builds on the 2002 Born-alive Infants Protection Act – would require appropriate care and hospital admission for a child who lives through an abortion or attempted abortion. “As long as the human rights of babies are subjected to the autonomous “choices” of others or the profiteering of corporations, our national conscience will continue to cry out”.
The Senate vote on Planned Parenthood would be “another re-run vote” that has failed before, said Reid of Nevada. “The bill before us now represents the best option to keep the government funded, to protect women’s health, to press the pause button on funding for a scandal plagued organization as we investigate further into some truly shocking allegations”.
“This is when unborn children can react, even recoil, to stimuli an adult would recognize as painful”, McConnell said.
Planned Parenthood, even after the video onslaught, remains tremendously popular with Americans – significantly more popular than Congress, either political party, any of the presidential candidates or Obama. “Where is the compassion and concern for ‘the little guy, ‘ the abortion survivor, whose heart is beating and alive?”
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) accused McConnell of wasting time. Mitch McConnell of Ky. speaks on Capitol Hill in Washington.
After stating that he wants to see Planned Parenthood defunded because of his stance on abortions, Whoopi bluntly told him to rethink his decision. “Don’t throw up the white flag before you’ve fought the fight”. He said the chamber may need to work this weekend.
There’s also this: Paul and Cruz are both presidential candidates, and news coverage of either’s effort to defund Planned Parenthood doesn’t hurt either’s popularity with the base they’re hoping to rally.
The clean bill will likely receive significant support from Senate Republicans, many of whom still plan to pursue investigations and legislative action against Planned Parenthood in the future outside of the funding debate. The House Judiciary Committee held the first of two hearings on the subject September 9. – Donald Trump, regarding his stance against Planned Parenthood. Senators voted 53-46 to bring such a bill to the floor.
Senators voted 54-42 to move ahead on the abortion legislation, but that fell six votes short of the 60 needed to advance the bill.
The continuing resolution would fund the federal government through December 11th, although money for Planned Parenthood would be redirected to community health centers. Some conservatives want the Planned Parenthood cutoff included in legislation financing government agencies, which would all but guarantee an Obama veto and a partial government shutdown on October . 1.
