Xiaomi Debuts as MVNO Operator
This China-based smartphone OEM has announced MVNO services with “Mi Mobile”, a service which basically simplifies carrier packages for consumers.
Xiaomi isn’t taking the conventional route with its wireless network, it won’t be buying spectrum from the government and setting up its own infrastructure, rather it will set up an MVNO or mobile virtual network operator.
The Chinese brand announced on Twitter that it has launched not only the Michigan 4c smartphone, but also a new Bluetooth speaker and carrier service. First is a pay-as-you-go model which charges 0.10 yuan ($0.02) for each minute on voice calls, each text message or each MB of data. MiMobile offers a Sim that works over China Telecom’s 2G/3G/4G network. As is customary for Xiaomi, the plans will only be available online. Under the second plan, purchasers will get 3GB data bundle for CNY 59 every month. It supports China Telecom 2G, 3G, and 4G networks and will be available in public beta starting October.
Xiaomi is hoping to compete against China’s three state-owned telecom providers.
The Michigan 4c also supports infrared technology to replace common remote controls, such as for a TV or air conditioner, and Xiaomi’s EdgeTap tecnology to perform common functions with a simple tap of the phone. The company has also showcased their new Bluetooth speaker, and to make things even more interesting, they’ve launched their very own MVNO services. Xiaomi also expanded its range of accessories with a range of colourful range of mini Bluetooth speakers and a pocket selfie stick.
