Pope Francis Greeted By Obama Upon US Arrival
Francis has made a point of using particularly modest cars, part of his emphasis on simplicity and conservatism and rejection of today’s consumerist lifestyle.
The pope spent a few minutes greeting onlookers outside the nunciature before heading inside. Its architect was Frederick V. The pope stopped at the end of the red carpet to accept a bouquet of flowers from a young girl. He then walked across the tarmac while chatting with a smiling Mr. Obama.
Pope Francis is in the U.S.to participate in the 2015 World Meeting of Families taking place in Philadelphia.
Francis also said he did not plan to specifically mention the embargo in his address to Congress.
“He is a good teacher”, said Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday. He told reporters on the plane that some explanations of his writings may have given the impression he is “a little bit more left-leaning”. He says such explanations are wrong.
During the flight, Francis defended himself against conservative criticism of his economic views.
“I know it’s not just a once in a lifetime thing, it’s never happened before and it might not happen again”, Bramanti said.
The nation’s capital is the first leg of the three-city trip in the United States for the pontiff. “We are asked to live the revolution of tenderness as Mary, our Mother of Charity, did”.
Pope Francis will give a speech to the Joint-Meeting of Congress (both the Senate and House of Representatives).
Afterwards, Francis and Obama will have a private meeting in the Oval Office, while in the Cabinet Room the Vatican secretary of state, Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, will meet US Secretary of State John Kerry. They have included an interactive map on their website.
Six of the current GOP presidential candidates, including Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Chris Christie, are practicing Catholics.
In Washington, the White House sought to highlight the alignment between the president and the pope, while de-emphasizing areas of discord. Cardinal Timothy Dolan and elected officials have condemned the black market for pope tickets.
Some contract federal workers are planning to strike Tuesday as all eyes turn to Washington for the Pope’s arrival.
Pope Francis will officiate the canonization of Junipero Serra at the mass. This is the first canonization of a saint on USA soil.

Pope Francis is scheduled to officially meet with President Obama at the White House on Wednesday.
He said Francis is a people pleaser and his free spirit and modern ways have connected him to all faiths. He touched down at the Air Force base in Maryland at 3:49 p.m.

But spokesman Josh Earnest downplayed the political import of Francis’s visit. He had hoped to enter the United States through Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, like so many people do. It certainly is a protected constitutional right of theirs to do that.
