Utah Bank robbery suspected arrested in Layton after U. of U. alert

Police have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting three people, including an infant, in a Salt Lake City house where he lived in the basement, authorities said on Saturday.

Detective Dennis McGowan said police found the bodies on Friday around 6pm while looking for the family of an Escalante Elementary School pupil, an 8-year-old boy whose family had not picked him up after school.

“So they went around to the back door, and the back door was open”, McGowan said.

KUTV-TV ( http://bit.ly/1V0RlqG ) reports that Salt Lake City police have identified two victims as 50-year-old Heike Poike and 2-month-old Lyrik Poike. The three victims were identified as Heike Poike, 50, Lyrik Poike, age 2 months, and Dakota Smith, 28. Alexander Hung Tran, 32, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of three counts of aggravated murder.

McGowan said the 8-year-old boy is safe and is now staying with relatives.

After Tran was found inside, officers discovered the bodies.

SALT LAKE CITY Police officers are investigating after finding three people dead in a west Salt Lake City neighborhood.

Heike Poike was the 8-year-old boy’s grandmother, and the baby was his sister. He lived in the home’s basement and allowed the victims to live on the home’s main floor, but Chipping didn’t know if they paid rent as formal tenants or had some other arrangement.

Police took Tran into custody and then discovered the three bodies inside.

Several dozen gathered for the candlelight vigil Saturday night. If you needed someone to talk to, she was there.

Officers called out to see if anyone was inside and when they entered, they discovered Tran inside the home with a gun, he said.

“Nobody deserves to die like this.”

Det. Richard Chipping offered more details Saturday about what officers found inside the home. One neighbor said Tran drove a auto into his mailbox three weeks ago.
