Late TD gives Cowboys win over Giants
The Dallas Cowboys earned a dramatic win over the New York Giants Sunday night, but it wasn’t all celebration in the locker room after the game. “He’s obviously close to me”, Romo stated after his franchise-record 24th fourth-quarter comeback.
Bryant, who’s expected to miss 4-6 weeks after breaking the fifth metatarsal on his right foot, had surgery to fix the injury on Monday, according to sources.
The Cowboys drove 72 yards in 1:27 after stopping New York at the 1 and forcing Josh Browns fourth field goal when a touchdown would have sealed the Giants first victory in an opener against Dallas. They shouldn’t have. Eli Manning left his brain on the sideline on third-and-goal and gave Tony Romo a lifeline. “That’s 100 percent on me”.
The Cowboys are 8-0 against their division rival in openers – that 2009 game in Jerry World was Week 2 of the season after Dallas opened on the road. He finished with five catches for 48 yards.
The Dallas Cowboys are trying to remain optimistic with the prognosis of Dez Bryant.
New York’s opportunistic defense turned the tide in a game the Cowboys dominated early.
“They beat us pretty bad”, Luck said. Just seconds before, Romo’s third-down pass intended for Devin Street had turned into an interception when Giants safety Brandon Meriweather slammed the ball loose and it wound up in the hand of cornerback Trumaine McBride. He scored a career high 16 touch downs, and ran 15 yards on average. Either player would give Romo another option to run downfield and score.
Romo dropped a low snap but quickly reached down, picked it up and fired it to Witten, who pushed his way into the end zone with seven seconds left. It’s kind of hard to talk about his injury because I get emotional. “He has great understanding about what he wants to do”, Dallas coach Jason Garrett said.
Romo was intercepted on the ensuing play from scrimmage, as Giants linebacker Uani’ Unga pulled in a tipped throw intended for Witten. He left in the first quarter for what was described as dehydration. Mariota threw for 209 yards without an interception to join Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton as the only players to throw for four or more TD passes in their first National Football League game. That challenge for Joseph Randle will be rushing for more than 65 yards a night and for Jason Witten will need to turn the clock back to 2010.
