Cowboys get Cassel in trade with Bills
Matt Cassel has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys by the Buffalo Bills for a 2017 fifth round pick. Although the terms of the trade have not yet been disclosed, NFL Network’s Albert Breer is reporting a swapping of late round 2017 draft picks between the two teams for the veteran quarterback. That tracks with the IR/return list, which states a player must miss eight weeks but is eligible to resume practicing with the team in six weeks. The Cowboys still could use Weeden down the line if things don’t work out with Cassel, but after trading for Cassel it’s likely that he will get the chance to be the starter for this stretch without Romo.
Quarterback Matt Cassel has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported that Dallas was bringing in Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and Christian Ponder for workouts on Tuesday.
This quarterback Weeden can drive the ball downfield.
Most wouldn’t think a career backup would make all that much money. Cassel has started 71 games, almost four times Weeden’s total. That season, with the Chiefs, Cassel recorded 3,116 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. Flynn has a career passer rating of 85.9 over 357 attempts, which would put him at about 20th best in the 2014 National Football League season.
Cassel has yet to recreate that magic. Cassel, Taylor and EJ Manuel were part of a three-way competition for the starting job during training camp and the preseason. In 2014, after somehow signing for $10 million over two years, he somehow became the No. 1 over Teddy Bridgewater. Cassel is insurance. With an interim starting quarterback in place the Cowboys thoughts now turn to deciding who will fill the role vacated by Weeden’s elevation. He was intercepted twice while completing 18 of 33 passes for 183 yards.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are still reeling from the loss of Romo, who broke his collarbone during Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“He showed everybody he was comfortable”, defensive tackle Jeremy Mincey said.
